LA 20 Nations Of The World

Here is the first part of our assembly performing the Nations of the World item we learned from Yakko. Although a little outdated in 2011, it was fun learning all these countries along with their locations. I’m very proud that everyone learned the lyrics of this tough song. Many adults were amazed that you guys knew them off by heart.

Special thanks goes to Mr Formentin for coming in and practising the song with us along with his awesome guitar playing on the day.

Todays – ICT Tasks

Task One

Building on our  maths knowledge of statistics and putting them to practical use, I would like you today to examine the Australia Bureau of Statistics website to check out some statistical facts about our state of Western Australia.

You will  need to use this sheet ( WA Quiz) to guide your investigation. Type your answers directly onto the sheet.

Task Two

Once I have checked your answers, you can experiment being an entrepreneur in the Lemonadae Stand Game. Have you ever thought about running your own business? As a budding first business owner and manager of a street lemondade stand, you will attempt to maximise your profits and minimise your expenses in this game. The winner will receive some coins!

Canon Paper-Craft

Here is the Canon Papercraft site I was telling you about in class today that you might want to use for some extra credit towards your Ancient Diorama projects, or even check out some of the Science based crafts that you can experiment with. Some of these might be a little tricky, so ask mum and/dad to help out if you need a hand.

Parliament House Excursion

by Javier

On Thursday 25 August LA 20 went to the Parliament House and Electoral Education Buildings in the city. It was really exciting that we were going to be visiting Parliament House.

First we went to Electoral Education Office where we watched a video about polling and democracies. After that we went into a polling place, where we got to vote for our favourite fast food. We could choose from McDonalds, KFC, Subway and Pizza. Subway won by lots of votes.

Next we went to a small classroom where we learnt about the Federal Parliament, State Parliament and Local Parliament. Then we did a few quizzes.

Finally, we got to go to Parliament House. Firstly, we went into the lower house and while the tour guide told us about what happens in there we got to sit in the seats where the actual state parliament sit. Then we went to the upper house but we did not sit down. We just stood around the central table. After that we got to have some juice and muffins and since there were left overs we got to answer questions to try and win them.

Overall, it was an enjoyable experience and we learned alot about Australia’s Parliamentary system and history.

E-readers – The Future Of Books?

Being a ‘rabid reader’, I was wondering for a long time whether or not I should buy one of the new e-readers that are making their way onto the market. I love books, but they were beginning to really pile  up in my house, they are quite expensive to buy here in Australia (often $35) for a new release, and I love to switch between books depending on my mood.

I finally setlled for an Amazon Kindle and have since been using it in class during our reading sessions.

I  have to say that I was so glad I bought it. Why is it so awesome you might ask?

1) I can now carry around a heap of books at a time, flicking through several on any occasion depending on my mood. It also saves me on storage space. Bye-bye book cases and crates of used books.

2) The text on the screen is so clear to read, and my eyes can take it in faster than reading a normal page. I can also play and listen to Audio Books if I choose to do so, and listen to them in the car.

3) Books are sent to the Kindle in seconds, and I bought a book costing $35 in the shop here for $4 on Amazon with no huge international postage fees.

4)  I can make notes and highlight passages I like in books and upload them to Facebook, Twitter or the internet in general.

I know many of you are also thinking of adding a Kindle or ereader to your Christmas list – if you love reading as much as I do, I highly recommend it!

Ancient Civilisation Reports

When writing your reports on your chosen Ancient Civilisation, it would be best to split the research and writing tasks among the members of your group. A great site to help you find and organise your information can be found here.

You can choose from a number of topics to research involving your ancient civilisation including – homes/architecture, entertainment, arts, clothing, religion, transportation, daily life, inventions, food & diet.

The group needs to ensure that the report is accurate, written in your own words, proof read and edited for run on sentences, spelling and punctuation, and accompanied by illustrations or pictures suitable to your topics.

Wakakirri Festival 2011

By Jaida

On Friday the 12th August, Harmony Primary competed in their first Wakakirri Festival at the Regal Theatre in Perth.  Wakakirri is about telling stories through music and dance. Our story was about the impact of global warming in Antarctica.

We left school after lunch and made our way to The Regal Theatre. When we arrived, a few marshals explained the rules and gave us our points card. This is what the marshals used to give us points for being quiet and well behaved.  We also lost points for being loud .Soon we were taken to our dressing room upstairs. We passed one of the other schools and they had a mAD hATTER, cards and many other amazing costumes, many of them looked like characters from Alice in Wonderland.

We waited quite a while until it was our dress rehearsal. When we got on stage the backstage people set up the props and got into position.  The dancers were told where to come on stage and the stage rules. As soon as it was finished we headed back to the dressing room where we had our dinner (wraps).

Our turn on stage finally came, and it was fantastic. Rebecca, Sarah and Jesse told the audience a little bit about our performance.Once again we headed back to the dressing room and had more food (cheese and tomato pizza). Maybe after ten minutes or so we went down stairs to meet our parent s to go home.

Ancient History Diorama Projects

By now you will have started the planning process for how your diorama is going to look. I want you to carefully consider the features of your diorama and take care and effort in constructing it as it will be assessed in line with our Technology and Design outcomes.

This video clearly shows how you can use paper mache to build up the structure of your diorama’s base. You can also find step by step instructions of this video here.

The person who created that video also has some excellent tutorials for helping you with various aspects of your diorama, depending on how far you want to personally take your project.

You can also see a variety of diorama images here to give you some inspiration.
